I got all of the shingling done (this picture wasn't QUITE finished..) It took less time than I thought it would, but more time than I would have liked to spend. By the end, I was getting quite tired of shingling. My 6 year old thought I should leave the roof not quite finished and make some construction worker dolls to finish it for me.
The accomplishment that I am most proud of though is the hardwood floor for the main level. I started with a bamboo table runner from Big Lots.
Unraveled it, then used just the wider strips cut into random lengths and glued to a paper template of the ground floor.
Once that was dry, I cut the ragged edge with a small hand saw, stained it, and let it dry. When it was totally dry, I applied a coat of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze to give it a great shine. I am quite pleased with how it came out! Next step will be to stick it down with some double sided tape and glue in some baseboard mouldings.
I missed my chance to go to the local miniature store yesterday, so now I need to wait until Thursday when they are open again. It will give me some time to play with the wood scraps I have and try my hand at creating some furniture.

My very first house was an Orchid kit I won in a contest, back when my 2 girls were in primary school. Sadly, neither one had any interest in this project, so it's great to read that your daughter is making suggestions, even if it wasn't exactly what you thought you wanted to hear after all your hard work. ;) A few years after I finished my Orchid, the porch was partially demolished, along with the trim on the roof and some other bits and pieces, by a newly adopted shelter kitty. My elder daughter suggested I re-glue the trim, pile the broken porch parts and some new mini lumber near the damaged porch, then place yellow police tape around the front until I had time to repair the damage. I did as she suggested, it's still there, and so far none of the mini neighbours have complained. :D

Chris, I love it! I have all boys, so I am getting used to the crazy ways boys think. I think we might have to find a "rehab" house that we can build as a construction scene. They would love something like that. The Orchid is my very first house as well. I think I am going to leave off most of the gingerbread. Thanks for your comment! - C
