We made it through the surgery yesterday. I was pretty impressed with the surgeon. He did a nice job of explaining everything to us before he started and came out to see us as soon as he was done. Start to finish, from the time we had to leave Emerson's bedside until the time we could get back in to see him was less than 90 minutes.
They are going to keep him pumped full of pain medication for the next few days to make sure he is comfortable since at this point he can't really tell us what he needs. They have told us the next four days or so could be a bit of a roller coaster ride as his body readjusts to the new blood flow and recovers from the surgery. He has the tiniest little bandage under his left arm that you can see in this photo. I can't imagine working on something that small, and yet Emerson was about three times the size of the smallest baby this doctor has done this same surgery on!
So far, he is doing well. He only needed a little bit of blood pressure support last night for a short time and as of this morning has been maintaining his blood pressure on his own. He is back on the oscillating vent, but that was to be expected. Yesterday evening he was needing 100% oxygen but overnight has come down to between 50 - 60%. We are all pleased with his progress and hope that this isn't just a "honeymoon" period and that he will continue to do so well over the next few days. I can't wait to get this behind us so we can get on with feeding and holding him!!!
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. They are greatly appreciated.
