Update

Emerson is still in the hospital. He has been off of all respiratory support since yesterday morning. Pulmonary was just about ready to send us home and we got notified by the lab that the spinal fluid they took on Saturday had started growing something it shouldn't be. There is a good chance that it is a contaminant and not an actual infection, but just in case we have to stay until the final results are back from the cultures. It has been a tough transition for mom shifting from the extremely high standard of care in the NICU and PICU to the regular pediatric med/surg floor, but we are surviving. The hardest part for me is feeling like there isn't enough supervision up here for me to leave him alone at all. Jim has been stuck with the other two boys at home, and everyone is getting pretty miserable. I think tonight I am going to go home and be with the other two while Jim spends the night here with Emerson.
Since we are stuck here at least another day, pulmonary is going to try and use the time to their advantage and get some testing done that they would like to see. They have also put him back on a drug called theophilline which is a central nervous stimulant in hopes that if he gets sick again it will be enough of a reminded for him to keep breathing.
